BELIZE — 10-DAY ADVENTURE ITINERARY

Jungle. Diving. Waterfalls. Wildlife. Caves. Culture. Rivers. Reef.

DAYS 1–4

SAN IGNACIO / CAYO DISTRICT

This is the adventure portion of the trip.

Stay somewhere surrounded by jungle rather than in the center of town.

DAY 1 — ARRIVE IN BELIZE

Fly into Belize City.

Drive directly to San Ignacio.

Check into a jungle lodge.

Keep the first day simple:

  • Explore the property

  • Swim

  • Walk through the jungle

  • Look for toucans, monkeys and other wildlife

  • Have dinner at the lodge

  • Sit outside after dark and listen to the jungle

The first night should feel like the trip has actually begun.

DAY 2 — XUNANTUNICH + RIVER ADVENTURE

Start early and visit Xunantunich, one of Belize's major ancient Maya sites.

Cross the Mopan River on the small hand-cranked ferry and explore the ruins with a local guide.

Climb El Castillo for the view over the surrounding jungle.

Spend the afternoon on the river.

Depending on conditions, do:

  • River tubing

  • Swimming

  • Canoeing

  • Kayaking

  • Jungle river exploration

Finish the day back at the lodge.

Dinner and an early night.

DAY 3 — ATM CAVE

This is one of the biggest adventure days of the trip.

Spend the day at Actun Tunichil Muknal, also known as ATM Cave.

The experience involves hiking through the rainforest, crossing rivers, swimming and wading through the cave system before reaching the enormous underground chambers.

The cave contains Maya archaeological remains and was used for ceremonial purposes.

This should be done with a licensed guide.

Plan for most of the day.

Afterward:

  • Shower

  • Eat a huge dinner

  • Have a drink

  • Sleep

DAY 4 — CARACOL + WATERFALLS + MOUNTAIN PINE RIDGE

Leave early and head deep into the jungle toward Caracol.

Spend the morning exploring the ancient Maya site.

Then continue through the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.

Spend the afternoon chasing waterfalls.

Possible stops:

  • Big Rock Falls

  • Rio On Pools

  • Other swimming holes and jungle waterfalls depending on conditions

Swim, hike and spend time in the forest.

Return to San Ignacio for the night.

This is the full jungle day.

DAY 5

SAN IGNACIO → HOPKINS

Leave the jungle and drive south toward Hopkins.

The landscape changes from rainforest and mountains to Caribbean coast.

Check into a small hotel or guesthouse near the beach.

Spend the afternoon walking around Hopkins and getting into the water.

This is the day to slow down a little.

In the evening, experience Garifuna culture.

Look for a genuine local drumming, music or food experience rather than a large tourist production.

Try traditional Garifuna food, especially hudut.

Spend the night in Hopkins.

DAY 6

COCKSCOMB BASIN + WILDLIFE

Get up early and head into Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.

Spend the morning hiking through the rainforest.

The area is known for its wildlife and jaguar habitat.

The goal isn't necessarily to see a jaguar.

The goal is to be in the environment where they live.

Look for:

  • Howler monkeys

  • Toucans

  • Frogs

  • Tropical birds

  • Insects

  • Tracks

  • Wildlife along the trails

  • Waterfalls and swimming areas

Spend part of the day hiking and swimming.

Return to Hopkins in the afternoon.

Beach and dinner at night.

DAY 7

HOPKINS → CAYE CAULKER

Travel from Hopkins toward the coast and continue to Caye Caulker.

Check into a small hotel or guesthouse.

No car needed.

Walk or bike around the island.

Spend the afternoon swimming and exploring.

Go to The Split.

Have lunch.

Find a good place for sunset.

This is intentionally a slower day before the diving.

DAY 8

DIVING THE BELIZE BARRIER REEF

This is one of the main reasons for coming to Belize.

Spend the day diving.

Depending on certification, experience and conditions, look at dive sites around the Belize Barrier Reef and nearby atolls.

The priority is seeing:

  • Coral reefs

  • Nurse sharks

  • Stingrays

  • Sea turtles

  • Eagle rays

  • Reef fish

  • Moray eels

  • Barracuda

  • Coral walls

  • Other marine life

If you're an experienced diver, look into doing a longer trip to one of Belize's major offshore atolls.

The diving should be one of the biggest highlights of the trip.

If you don't want a full day of diving, combine diving with snorkeling.

DAY 9

OUTER REEF + SAILING + ISLAND ADVENTURE

Charter a small boat or join a small-group sailing trip.

Get away from the main tourist areas.

Spend the day moving between reef and small cayes.

Swim.

Snorkel.

Dive if possible.

Fish.

Explore remote beaches.

Have lunch on the boat or on a small island.

The goal is to get away from crowds and spend an entire day on the water.

Stay out for sunset if possible.

This should be the most relaxed adventure day of the trip.

DAY 10

CAYE CAULKER → BELIZE CITY → HOME

Wake up early.

Swim one last time.

Have breakfast.

Walk around the island.

Take the water taxi back toward Belize City.

Fly home.
